Fredericksburg With Friends

This past weekend we used a vacation day and drove to the Texas hill country with some friends. We’ve made the trip several times with one other couple but this time we added some newer friends. We introduced the new couple to many new things, including Cooper’s BBQ in Llano, multiple wine-tastings in one day and camping. Yes, camping. The man had not camped out since his son was young, and the woman never at all. No, I’m not kidding. And it’s not like we were roughing it. The closest we got to any serious wildlife was the little burro (burrito?) pictured here. The burros and some impalas were right behind our cabins. Yes, as in KOA Kabins. No tents or sleeping bags for us car-campers. Right next to us was a group on their bikes and trikes. They all had trailers with built-in tents. Very impressive. I found myself watching them a lot. It made me miss my bike!
After we arrived and unpacked we made a quick visit to downtown Fredericksburg and then went back to the KOA grounds to prepare for dinner. We were still full from Cooper’s so we just snacked on cheese and crackers and fake crab. Then we retired to camp chairs and proceeded to talk and work our way through several bottles of wine. My wife had an attack of silliness at one point and laughed until she couldn’t breathe. Pictorial evidence was created. Lightweight.
Day two started with a breakfast of eggs, sausage and waffles. After that we drove to the wildflower farm (pictured on the right) and perused and did some window-shopping and sampled biscuits and jelly. Then we proceeded on to several wineries. We took our new friends to Comfort and had a late lunch there, and then met back up with the other friends in Lukenbach. Another first for the new friends. Seeing all those bikes made me miss mine again!
I took some photos of the amazing cypress tree next to the main Lukenbach area (left). It’s huge! We then made our way back to camp for steak and salad and lots of extras. Then we consumed more wine. We were all tired and passed out by 10:00pm.
We awoke Sunday to cooler than forecasted temperatures. Frost was observed on some vehicles. We had eggs and cinnamon rolls for breakfast and then packed up and headed back to the big D F Dub. The round trip came to around 730 miles.
Even though great fun was had by all, I was a bit sad to discover that I wasn’t particularly impressed any more by Texas wines. Perhaps my tastes have changed?
